Welcome to Oz 2.0

Communicating through the frame - A Cinematic Approach to Digital Still Photography
At the heart of our desire to create photographs is the need to convey the feeling we experience while seeing a moment of life happen before our eyes-at the time the image is felt and seen.
The challenge of photography is to create still images that move the viewer the same way that we are moved when committed to the moment while capturing the image. All too frequently, the attempt to reveal the image on a monitor or paper as the image was experienced becomes laborious and frustrating. This workshop reveals the methods and techniques for overcoming these challenges both out in the field and in the digital darkroom.
A workshop based on the newly revised book “Welcome to Oz” to be released this summer, this workshop is for digital photographers that want to learn the secret of how to be taken by a photograph rather than a photographer taking pictures. This workshop teaches participants the why to, how to, and when to use technical skills to create the photographic images and prints that convey the same feeling as experience behind the camera.
Participants explore new ways of seeing and make composition and framing choices at the speed of life, without hesitation, in the - Exercises to improve compositions skills
- How to control the viewer’s eye to move through an image they way you want it to be seen
- Lighting on a Laptop
- How to practice preemptive Photoshop - getting it right in camera so as to make life easier in post processing
- Image Harvesting - capturing multiple images for, focus, exposure and blur and putting them together to look like one image
- Black and White conversions that replicate the look of silver prints
- The key techniques to making the best prints
As the photographer is taken in at the moment he or she clicks, students discover ways to transmit this feeling to the viewer through the single frame. By week’s end, students have conquered numerous techniques in camera and in the digital darkroom, with new eyes, new workflow and an array of new prints. The result is not only beautiful imagery, but photographs that take the viewer as if they were behind the camera for that exact moment.

Return to Oz: The Environmental Landscape
Vincent Versace
Capture the essence of the season through renewed vision and enhanced craft
“Light, gesture and color are the key components of any Photograph.”
—Jay Maisel
Create timeless imagery by capturing the gesture of a moment with stillness. A continuation of material covered in Versace’s Welcome to Oz 2.0 workshop, participants explore how to make unique imagery in camera as well how to approach post processing in Photoshop not as if it is a verb, but as a noun.
There are few places on earth that are as full of light, gesture, color and the potential for timelessness than October in Maine. From the color and hue of the leaves to the mists of fog and rain, the diversity of light creates the environment for stunning imagery.
Working with lessons from his latest book to be released in the fall of 2010, a few of the many topics that are covered:
- Bokeh- the quality of how a lens goes from in focus to blur
- Depth of Field- how to use blur and focus to bring forth a more powerful image. (All students are provided with a free copy of Focalpoint 1.0 software from onOne software)
- Weather- how to use and make it in the computer when it doesn’t show as planned.
- The Lazarus Effect- how to make an out of focus image come back into focus. (All students are provided with actions and configurator by the instructor. Also three free plug-ins from NiK software
- Gesture- what is the gesture of a moment, how to capture it and how to use it to great motion with in a stillness
- Advanced Black and White- every black and white technique known to man, when to and when not to use them. (All students are provided with actions and configurator by the instructor)
- Shape and Color- How to use shape as the unwitting ally of color, so that color is remembered over shape in your images.
The result of this week’s intensive work in both the field and digital lab are images that echo the stillness and beauty of October in Maine - of the light, of the gesture, of the moment. The photographs are upheld by the unique vision of the participants in combination with exquisite technical craft.

Exploring Old Burma:
Land of the Golden Pagoda
with Vincent Versace
Isolated from the rest of the world for more than 30 years, Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a living museum, rich with pagodas, indigenous architecture, ancient villages, lively floating markets, talented craftspeople, lovers who kiss by sniffing, and tribal members who reach out to welcome travelers. Colonial Yangon, former Rangoon, still maintains its charm with wide tree lined avenues and friendly residents. The Shwedagon Pagoda, which towers almost 100 meters above the street, dominates the city of Yangon. This stupa is believed to be have been built more than 2500 years ago. Inle Lake, the jewel of Shan State, is sheltered among the hazy Blue Mountains. The lake, about 900 meters above sea-level, is studded with floating islands and water birds. Inle Lake is famous for its unique one-leg rowers, floating villages and waterfowl. As you are rowed through the shallow waters of the lake, your lens will capture the enchanting faces of the children and their parents in their stilt houses. One of the most fascinating places to watch the daily life of the people of “the countryside is in their markets. You will take your best photos of the tribal people as they come down to market to sell their luscious vegetables, fruits and flowers.
